The very first television commercial was shown on July 1, 1941 and cost just $9 to run. It aired during a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game. The commercial was for Bulova Watch Company. It consisted of a picture of a clock and a map of the United States and was accompanied by a voiceover that said, “America runs on Bulova time.”, and ran for 20 seconds.
Bulova Watch Company was already a pioneer in the advertising field. In 1926 they produced the first radio commercial too. That ad was simply, “At the tone, it’s 8P.M., B-U-L-O-V-A, Bulova watch time.” Then in 1931 they became the first watch manufacturer to spend more than $1 million on advertising for a single year. In 1940 they sponsored EVERY radio show in the top 20.
