Saturday Night LiveBack on October 11, 1975 when Saturday Night Live debuted George Carlin was the first guest host. The musical guests that night were Billy Preston and Janis Ian.

Back then the show was much different. Lorne Michaels has said that he didn’t know what the show was going to be until after the 4th episode when Candice Bergen was the guest host and did such a great job it would change the show forever. Coincidentally it was also the first appearence of one of the best-known sketches, The Land Shark. Another memorable bit that appeared for the first time in that 4th episode was News for the Hard of Hearing at the end of Weekend Update with Chevy Chase where he read back the top story with help from Garret Morris reading the top story for the hearing impaired. It definitely was a turning point for the show. Those first three episodes were, well to be frank, rather bad.
